Blog: The PowerPC dream

Made by: Nova, on 23-8-2024 at 20:54 CEST (8:54 PM)

Hi again! First off, no, daily blogs won't become the norm. I just really want to talk about this now xdd

So, what is PowerPC even you might ask, well, PowerPC is just like x86 a CPU architecture. But, just, a little different. PowerPC is what is known as a RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) processor and x86 is known as a CISC (Complex Instruction Set Computer) processor. Basically it means that PowerPC can in some instances run more efficently than regular x86 at the cost of compatibility.

So, what's my goal here? Well, I want to get a PowerPC based computer. But, since no-one makes them anymore I'm kind of stuck with the QorIQ T4240, which is a little too expensive for me. But, if I ever find a good CPU that isn't going to assasinate my bank account for a hobby project I will begin developing a custom OS for it. Yes, I will develop a custom operating system for an obscure CPU architecture for a hobby project.

But Nova, UNIX and Linux for PowerPC exist, do we really need another PowerPC OS that will be added to the pile that no-one uses?
No, of course not, But I want to dabble my feet in OS and kernel development, and having something running on an obscure architecture only makes it more intriguing to me.

Now, it will absolutely be a while before I get my paws on a PowerPC powered PC (hehe). So, if you're now also interested in PowerPC and development for it, I have something for you while you wait! (Well, it's not mine but I really want to give these amazing people a shout on my "very popular" website)
This amazing project! (<- thats a link)

But this wraps up my second post, thank you for reading and have a wonderful day/night!
